Feel free to ask questions here. Or email me: bobliu2008@gmail.com Here, we are chasing the best rate plans. There are risks. If you’re looking for safe long-term (12+ months) plans, this probably is NOT the right place.
Strategies used here: * Switch among short-term (less than 12 months) plans frequently. * Reserve it when rates are low, to Use it when rates are high.
Why short-term plans? * Cheaper (except in the summer). * A seasonal “pattern” - rates are low in winter, high in summer.
What is this “Reserve to Use”? Electricity providers allow us to pick a switch date, some time in the future. Some switch dates could be set 3 months from now. We “reserve” a plan ahead of time when the rate is low in winter. And start to “use” it 3 months later, when the rate is high in summer.
For example: We could “reserve” a 6-month plan in January when the rate is low, to start it 3 months later in April. We’ll be “using” it from April to October when the rates are high in summer.

Good to know: No penalty 14 days before the contract expiration date
Public Utility Commission of Texas (Electricity FAQs): www.puc.texas.gov/consumer/facts/faq/electricity.aspx
“What if my contract is about to expire? Retail electric providers are required to notify residential customers at least 30 days before a contract expires. The residential customer can switch without incurring an early termination charge if the switch is no earlier than 14 days before the contract expiration date provided in the notice. If the customer takes no action in response to the notice, the REP will serve the customer on a month-to-month product.”

Hi Bob…..thanks for the quick refresher. Where is this “Reserve to Use” specified ? I do not see it in the EFL(s). Do you have to call them to get this ? I want to switch to a three month plan but don’t want it to start until the December/January timeframe.

I’m sorry for the confusion.
“Reserve to Use” is not in the EFLs. It’s a “term/concept” I personally created. : )
For example, today is 11/12/2022. I can “reserve” a plan, Just’s Autopay PTC Plan - 3. I request it to start/use 3 months later from now, on 2/12/2023. So, I “reserve to use” this plan. Not now, but 3 months later.
The main purpose is to reserve a good plan when rates are low. Delay the use of the plan (for 3 months) when rates are high.
In winter, December/January timeframe, be ready to “reserve to use” a good plan for the summer later.
Feel free to ask. I know it’s hard to make a “term/concept” clear.

If you, or anyone, tell me your current plan expiration date, I would be glad to make a suggestion specifically for your case.
