Continuously, electricity providers keep inventing NEW kinds of tricks/traps selling their products. This is also true - If one provider invented one, some other providers will copy it. :)
These are what I found recently.
* They require you to sign-up by phone to get some of their plans. For example, current top 3 low-rate plans offered by Just Energy and Southern Federal.
My take: Their other plans we can sign-up online, but not these plans. Why?! That’s a red-flag to me. I don’t trust making a deal over the phone. We don’t have much control.
* They create new charge terms in their contracts. For example, Just Energy’s “One-time terrapass™ set up and carbon offset purchase: $14.99.” “For purposes of this EFL, 1/12 of this set up cost is included in the average prices above.” webs.justenergydeals.com/Generate_Docs/Generate_EflLinks.aspx?RID=M+o7fT9Oo/s=&RCID=5FJjBoXiejM=&L=6f+Ch9flI7k=
My take: That’s cheating. :) It’s a 3-month, not 12-month, contract. It should be 1/3, not 1/12, of this set up cost is included in the average prices above. The real rate is higher.

As of end of July, the "tricks" continue.
Here's a few observations for recent short term electricity contracts. In the past, if I wanted a short term contract, I could just go with the lowest rate, without having to dig too deep into the details. However, the lowest rate plans available these days come with extra clauses in the contracts that you need to review and fully understand before signing up.
Some don't enable you to sign-up online, (which is the preferred approach). For those, there is no link on the power-to-choose website to initiate a sign-up. (However, Southern Federal does now provide a link to sign-up online, in contrast to their early summer practice).
Some include a "one-time terrapass" fee included in the contract (and may be incorrectly calculated in the plan's published "Average price per kilowatt-hour"). (See JustEnergy EFLs)
Some include a "JustGreen" monthly fee. If the plan says it is optional, you may need to explicitly opt-out (and remember ... this may be during a verbal signup process via phone which can be prone to error). (See JustEnergy EFLs)
I typically ignore plans with a base monthly fee. But in the current mix, the short term contracts with a base monthly fee may be less costly than those with terrapass or JustGreen clauses.
To verify the clauses that impact your costs, you need to read both the published EFL for the plan, as well as the TOS for the plan, to gain a full understanding (yet it can still be confusing). In the past, a simple review of the EFL would have been sufficient to analyze your monthly costs.

Thanks to Ronnie, * “$14.99 is a one time charge only if you go and cancel it, otherwise you are charged $14.99 every month.“ * “You must pay this charge at the time of sign-up, you will then be given a userid/psw for the terrapass website where you can now go sign in and cancel it.”
